About

An ohio native, Shaena Mallett currently resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Her heart and her travels often lead back to the hills of Southeastern Ohio, the woods of Northwest Pennsylvania, and the maze of New York City. She is a graduate of Ohio University, where she received a specialized degree in Participatory Visual Ethnography. Her other academic interests and endeavors include human rights, applied advocacy anthropology, community organizing, women's and gender studies, photojournalism and documentary film.

Her work is rooted in memory, curiosity and social consciousness. Currently, her photography is focused on exploring the interplay between environment and culture, agricultural heritage and women's practical and spiritual relationships to land.

Aside from taking pictures, Shaena's other interests include sustainable agriculture, learning how to grow fruit trees, turning her yard into a permaculture wonderland, painting, crafting, herbalism, playing the ukulele and musical saw, and making lists.
